Kate - I guess I considered it "minor" b/c I tend to use slings on trad routes as opposed to QD's. If I'm on a sport route and need a longer draw then its pretty easy to link two together to extend them, but you are right, a longer dogbone option would definitely be ideal! Yep they aren't cheap - although they generally run a couple bucks less than the Petzl Spirits. I'd put them on the cheaper side of the "luxury draws," if that makes sense. I always thought the Spirits were the best of the best, but I actually like these better. In my mind its worth having at least a small set (4-6) for hard sport routes where clipping needs to be like clockwork w/o mistakes. If you are doing mostly trad, then you might be better off spending your money elsewhere.

Nice review, C is adorable with those QD's.

I don't know if I would say "One size" is a *minor* drawback. If you're using QD's on a trad route, having a set of longer draws can really help. I think you should use your hookups at Trango to tell them to make a double-length set too!

Also, just did a quick search, and I'm seeing prices around $22, yikes! That's like Petzl expensive. Do you think it's worth the investment?

We are in metro DC. So the emphasis is decidedly not on families. Part of it may be my own insecurities with knowing those attitudes are out there. When we are in NRG, it seems more relaxed and friendly towards a big group of kids and parents (of course they could be ranting on the internet still, lol) It probably is just the demographics determining the attitudes. I only go to the gym with my son when it's the emptiest because there is already competition for wall space. It's hard because our local outdoor crag is unsuitable for small children and sometimes even more competitive for easy wall space.
My husband thinks its an "indoor" problem. But he is sometimes snobby about that whole "gym craze" haha.

Sarah,
Thanks for the kind words about the blog. I like the way you put that - it IS perfectly normal and possible to be a climbing family, not just a climber who has kids! We have been fortunate and haven't had any negative experiences with other climbers at the crag - at least as far as I'm aware of....that's not to say they aren't ranting about us on the internet behind our back. ; ) Most of the people we run into seem psyched that we are still getting out with a little guy in tow. We are also blessed to have an indoor gym that is very supportive of families that are wanting to climb. What part of the country are you in? I wonder if certain crags are more "progressive" (for lack of a better word) than others when it comes to family?

It's true that they don't have a wide variety in regards to length, however I do like how easily you can connect two in order to lengthen a draw. These bad boys are top notch.

I've been a die hard Hotwire fan for my rope side for 5 years, and clipping these guys is about as good as it gets. Blows the Spirit away in my opinion, with the exception of being available in only one length.
