Soft Star: Minimalist Shoes for Toddlers (and GIVEAWAY!)

A while baIMG_8820ck I wrote a post on why you should let your kids run around barefoot.  Basically it boils down to the fact that bare feet is what nature intended, and that allowing your child some “sans shoes” time is a key component to healthy foot development.  However, unless you spend all your days living in a warm-weathered hippie commune, there will be plenty of situations where appropriate footwear is not only recommended, but required.  But just because your toddlers preschool enforces a shoe policy doesn’t mean that his/her tootsies have to feel cramped and restricted all day long.

So what should you look for in a developmentally-friendly children’s shoe?  Most importantly, make sure the toe box has plenty of wiggle room (and not just in shoes, but socks and sleeper jammies as well!)  Secondly, keep it simple.  Steer clear of stiff, bulky shoes with any sort of arch support or molded footbeds.   Your child’s foot is soft, pliable, and full of cartilage – and can develop much more naturally with a simple, minimalist design.  Basically all your child needs is a thin layer of warmth and protection from harsh and potentially dangerous terrain (ie, hot asphalt, broken glass, etc.)

Not the best of pictures, but it's the only time he was sitting still!

Not the best of pictures, but it’s the only time he was sitting still!

We recently had the opportunity to try out the Child Ramblers from Soft Star.  In short, we love them!  Brushed suede on top, and luxurious softness on the inside, these shoes are the next best thing to barefoot!  An ankle elastic makes for easy on/off (C can do it himself, which make us both happy!).  And a thin, flexible vibram rubber sole means that these shoes perform just as well on the hiking trail as they do on the playground.

You can choose from about a million different color/material combinations on the Soft Star website, but if for whatever reason you can’t find a perfect match, you can design your own, and then the sky is REALLY the limit!  And they make shoes in grown-up sizes as well (so in theory your entire family could match 😉 )

I’d be lying if I said the Soft Stars were C’s favorite choice in footwear.  In actuality he’d much prefer to go barefoot or wear his $3 dino flip flops from Old Navy (what can I say, he’s just like his mama when it comes to covering up his feet!)  But for situations when “real shoes” are a must (ie school, cold weather, etc), C will happily don his Soft Stars without any complaints.   And considering how picky this child can be about what he wears (not to mention the intense feelings he has for those crappy dino flip flops!), that’s saying a lot!

So if you’re looking for some minimalist options for your kiddo (or for yourself!), be sure to check out Soft Star.  The elves, as they call themselves, provide great customer service and are always available to answer any questions you have on your quest for the best footwear.  In fact, they’ve even offered up a $25 Soft Star gift certificate for one lucky reader – to enter just leave a comment below about your experience with minimalist shoes for either yourself or your kiddo (and as always, you’ll get extra likes for following either Soft Star or Cragmama on facebook)  And non-parents, don’t forget that they make grown-up shoes too!  Best of luck everyone – contest ends Friday, June 28th!

  1. So cute! When my kiddos were little they wore Robeez. Similar I think to what C has. But they loved them.

You don’t need to include me in the giveaway. Just wanted to give a thumbs up 🙂

I remember running around during the summertime as a kid barefoot! Running in the grass & darting across the hot pavement! I look forward to giving Aiden that freedom when he gets here! & not worrying about a little or a lot of dirt on the soles of his feet!

  3. Fortunately here there is a lot of sand (the beach… as playground material…) and who can resist one’s toes in the sand?

I’ve seen (and used) this type shoe for babies and early walkers… but hadn’t even considered them for bigger kids! I am curious to try them!

  4. I tried Five Fingers and due to a pretty long “Morton’s Toe” couldn’t stick with them. I picked up a pair of Sanuk “Chiba’s” a couple weeks ago and my feet have never be cooler (I have hot sweaty feet). These look similar to them and I bet Alex would rock them around town!

Lukas loves his soft star shoes too! I bought them because not only is his skin very sensitive to chemicals, but the typical leather tanning chemicals are a nasty cocktail. The mocs getted dinged up pretty easily but they have held up well. He can get them on and off by himself and they are also very comfortable. I’d love to try the other styles! (Liked both!)

I usually let my daughter go bare foot or walk outside in her socks. These look like they’d be great for when she really does need shoes.

Will look into those, Erica! We use Robeez and love their pre-walkers. The soles on those are not as protective. I like the idea of Soft Star’s rubber soles!

  8. Does barefoot count as minimalist? Because that’s how I roll when it’s warm – and wool socks when it’s not. And my kids are barefoot kids, too 🙂 These are super cute – thanks for the opportunity!

Soft Star shoes are the only shoes my don wears. He has chubby feet and no other shoe will fit. Soft Star makes a custom-sized pair of shoes for him at no extra charge. They are the best!

Love that auto correct. That would be my SON.

  11. I don’t think I’ve ever tried minimalist shoes. I do wear my Chacos the entire time weather permits where I live. I do love that these little shoes remind me of a family tradition to give new babies a pair of moccasins. The poor kid smells like jerky according to my nephew (smoked moccasins but their feet are warm and protected and they’re basically barefoot. Love them. I’m a fan on Facebook of Crag Mama 🙂

We tried the baby Soft Star mocs and they didn’t seem to work for J. I think they run a bit small, so I would suggest ordering a size up if you get the baby mocs. We like Robeez and Pedipeds, although the Pedipeds Originals are significantly more minimal (haha) than the other versions. We’ll have to try the SS Ramblers now that she’s getting bigger! I have heard good things about the Soft Star adult shoes, but haven’t tried them myself. I can’t wear the Vibram Five Fingers because I have weird toes, but I love the New Balance Minimus WT10 for trail running.

We used thin leather shoes when my son was just getting on his feet. Now he’s older and hates to wear shoes so I think these minimalist shoes would be great for him!

  17. Rubber soles – that’d be great. We love going bare foot but after my 20-mo-old stepped on a bee this wknd – we are going to have to wear shoes outside this summer!

  18. Ha – when you suggested discussing my experience with minimalistic footwear, my first thought was “People made so much fun of my Five-Fingers!” and my second was “Oh, and those Merrel minimals last summer did terrible things to my feet.” Then I saw all the comments about Robeez, and I remembered how great those were for our kiddo. So I’m going with that. We love Robeez I’d love to see how Soft Star worked for us as well!

My little guy is just now crawling, but after lots of research, I know I want to start him in soft bottom shoes 🙂 and let him go barefoot as much as possible. Makes me wonder if I wouldn’t have my arch problems if I had worn these as a kid!

I love having soft sole shoes for my son (although he’s growing out of his so fast!) Most babies walk like Frankenstein but he has a normal gait and runs like crazy! Our next investment is for some for me! (Like both pages on facebook – Jenn-Paul Henderson)

We love Soft Star for our daughter. My husband got some of the original runamocs for his birthday…. he wants to wear them to work. We can not decide which tie they would match.

I’ve been wearing original Runamocs daily for almost 3 years. It took some getting used to, but now I can’t imagine not having them. The original pair is going on it’s second sole (got them resoled by a local cobbler) and I just got a new pair in smooth nutmeg. I get comments about them all the time.

I love my Runamocs, but haven’t gotten any of their shoes for the kids. I think they would love them!

I would love to win a Soft Star GC to use for my little one due soon – I do follow them on FB and hope to find SS or similar shoes/mocs for him to grow up wearing. I got into running in just the last few years, and going minimal is all it took for me to go from feeling like running was work and ‘pounding the pavement’ (even though I only do trails and not pavement) to floating along and not being afraid to enter and enjoy running a technical 25k trail race!

I recently was able to save enough money to buy myself some shoes from soft star, and I love them! I have trouble with one of my feet hurting and since I started wearing these, I have had no pain at all. I wish I had the money to buy my kids each a pair!

I started off with Robeez and See Kai Run for my oldest. We discovered Soft Star Shoes while looking for flexible-soled winter boots for him. He’s 4 years old now and wears SSS year-round. They’re really the only kids’ shoes out there that tick all the right boxes: super-flexible soles, wide toe box and no arch support/moulded insoles. We love them so much I just ordered some Mary Janes for myself! My youngest isn’t walking quite yet, but once he does we’re definitely going to get him some SSS, so I’d sure love to win the gift certificate! 🙂

We started with Robeez and fell in love with SSS….but sadly I ordered my first pair, for my 4 yr old son, and my husband thought the box was recycling to go out and tossed the box & shoes in the recycling bin. 🙁

My kiddos go barefoot whenever possible (always when inside, often outside), and otherwise it’s always soft star! My husband and I wear them too, and they are my favorite shoes by far. Would love a gift certificate, as kids feet grow really fast!

My 15 month old has been in Soft Star shoes since he started walking at about a year old. We visited the shop and tried on lots of different styles and sizes, and ended up getting him a size seven – the kid has big feet! He’s starting to grow out of them already so we will be visiting again soon for another pair, and saving these ones – still in excellent condition – for perhaps a sibling down the line. A gift cert would come in handy…! I’ve also been a long-time “Like”-er of Soft Star on Facebook.

I love Soft Star! First found them when my goddaughter was wearing Robeez and her older brother wanted cozy shoes too. I was hard put to find a company making them big enough for him until I found Soft Star. Now I own several adult pairs for myself as well. Found your review through liking the SS Facebook page.
