How Our Family Has Gone Home(steadin’)…

How Our Family Has Gone Home(steadin’)…

If you’ve been following our family on social media, you may have noticed a recent influx of posts about homemade food.  That’s because for the past few months, I’ve been on a quest to provide more healthy food options for my family.  Specifically, more  veggies, and less processed food.  It started last fall during Apple-mania week, when I realized how fun it was to cook with local ingredients that are in season.  The next progression was pumpkin and zucchini – and our house began to fill up with healthy breads, oat bars, and fruit butters.  Then some time around Thanksgiving…Read the rest of this entry →

Backyard Workout Challenge

Backyard Workout Challenge

Recently I found myself stuck in a rut when it came to my mid-week cardio routine. (On the weekends, hubby and I can tag team with kid-duty, but during the week I’m usually left to my own devices.)  My available exercise window during the week is pretty darn small.  The most efficient way to squeeze in some exercise is to hop on the elliptical…but that gets pretty old.  So lately I’ve been putting myself through my own cross-training “boot camp” type workout in the backyard.  It’s a lot more fun than being cooped up inside, and it’s a great way…Read the rest of this entry →

An Ode to Digging (aka God Made Dirt, Dirt Don’t Hurt)

An Ode to Digging (aka God Made Dirt, Dirt Don’t Hurt)

If your toddler is anything like mine, a pile of dirt and a mighty machine is a simple formula for hours of entertainment!  Whether it’s dump trucks in the dirt of our (idle) backyard garden, or backhoes and bulldozers at the local beach volleyball court, our household rarely goes a full day without digging SOMETHING!  Even on craggin’ days, C’s backpack is filled with miniature construction vehicles that he uses to build roads, gather leaves and sticks, and pile up pebbles at the base of the cliff while the grown-ups are climbing.   While I’m not sure how similar it…Read the rest of this entry →

Greener Packaging Options for Food Storage (and GIVEAWAY!)

Greener Packaging Options for Food Storage (and GIVEAWAY!)

Back in mid-August, I wrote a post entitled “8 Tips for Greener, Healthier School Lunches,” with the hopes that it would provide families with a few fresh ideas for maximizing nutrition and minimizing empty calories during the school day.  Most of the ideas also happened to be more eco-friendly as well – but why stop at just the foods you eat when it comes to having a greener lifestyle?  The way those foods are stored can be just as important to the environment (as well as for your health!)  So here’s a few tips for “greening up” your food when…Read the rest of this entry →
