Fall Green Hour Idea: Picnics and Obstacle Courses!

Fall Green Hour Idea: Picnics and Obstacle Courses!

Not sure about your family, but ours got really into American Ninja Warrior this past summer.  Our favorites to watch, of course, were the climbers, and we had a blast jumping up and down for Brian Arnold as he got SO CLOSE to becoming the first American to finish Stage 3.  The show was fun on a very elementary level – I mean, who doesn’t love an obstacle course, right?  Events like the Mud Run, Spartan Race, and Muddy Buddy popping up in major cities all over the country are just more proof. C was always in bed by the…Read the rest of this entry →

Operation Beefcake Gams: Squat, Bike….Playground?

Operation Beefcake Gams: Squat, Bike….Playground?

If you’ve been following the blog of late, you may remember that I sustained a weird knee injury back in early March.  Apparently the theory that climbers don’t need to do any sort of workout for their legs is FALSE, as I’ve been strongly advised to incorporate some leg-strengthening exercises into my workout routine.   Anyway, in addition to all of the weird little exercises that my PT has prescribed for me (most of which make me feel ridiculously uncoordinated), I’ve also added a few more conventional activities into the mix. For one thing, I’ve been replacing some of my weekly…Read the rest of this entry →

Setting Your Mind: From a Toddler’s Perspective

Setting Your Mind: From a Toddler’s Perspective

“You can do anything you set your mind to.” Benjamin Franklin said it first, but it’s been said millions (and probably billions) of times since then.  It’s one of those inspirational, “action phrases.”  Teachers say it to their students to motivate them to aim high, and parents whisper it to their children to encourage them to dream big.  I’m sure we’ve all heard someone say it to us at some point, and in turn, I’m sure we’ve all said it to someone else.   It’s also the phrase that immediately popped into my head when I saw this picture.  Some…Read the rest of this entry →

A Simple Green Hour: Choosing Puddles Over Playgrounds

A Simple Green Hour: Choosing Puddles Over Playgrounds

When we first moved here a year and a half ago, Cragbaby and I were excited to discover that there were 3 different parks within just a few miles of our house – the perfect distance for sandwiching a toddler green hour in between a grown-up workout.  Olde Providence Park is a family favorite, and it’s been the scene of numerous green hours, two of which are documented here and here.  Over the summer the playground was torn down, and was just recently replaced with all sorts of colorful apparatus to climb on, jump from, and scramble under.  Last Wednesday…Read the rest of this entry →

Sentimental Snapshots: A Rainbow of Obstacles (and a GIVEAWAY from Clif)

Sentimental Snapshots: A Rainbow of Obstacles (and a GIVEAWAY from Clif)

The other day Cragbaby and I enjoyed a beautiful, sunny morning at Belle Johnston Park.  Though technically in Pineville, not Charlotte, it’s only 15 minutes or so from our house, and is well worth the drive for a morning’s worth of playground fun.  What I like about this park is that it seems to have been designed for multi-generational enjoyment, not just the wee folk.  In addition to the many playgrounds, giant sand pit, swing sets, and riding toys situated within the acreage of open green space, there are porch swings and benches scattered about, perfect for outdoor lovers of…Read the rest of this entry →
